Common Types Of Cosmetic Services

These are thin shells ov porcelain or resin placed over the natural teeth, and can be a conservative alternative in certain cases when agressive tooth preparation is not indicated.  Resin is an economical substitue for porcelain but is not as durable

Teeth can be made lighter by using different chemicals which oxidize the dark pigments.  These chemicals do not damage the teeth.  The bleaching can be accomplished gradually at home, or quickly in the office, by accelerating the process with a strong intense light.

Orthodontic treatment with wires and brackets has been the traditional way of straightening teeth.  For many cases where there is moderate crowding or spacing or other minor tooth position problems, Invisalign treatment, a system of progressive vIrtually invisible clear trays may be worn to achieve very satisfactory results without braces.

Old silver/mercury fillings look gray or even black over time.  Composite resins will match the natural color of your teeth, or can even be made to a lighter shade if you plan to bleach your natural teeth.

Although bonding is a technique used in almost all cosmetic procedures, the term is most commonliy used when composite resin is used to repair a portion of a chipped tooth.  It is a relatively inexpensive procedure, completed in a single visit.

An inlay are like a filling except that it is not made directly in the mouth.  A mold mast be made of the tooth and this allows a dujplicate model to be fabricated on which the inlay is fitted before being placed into the tooth.  It is much stronger than a filling.  It also provides better contact with adjacent teeth over time, because it does not wear down like a filling.  When decay or loss of tooth structure extends well below the gum line, it can offer a better marginal seal than a filling.   If cosmetics is not a concern, an inlay may be made of gold, for the most durable restoration of all.  An onlay is like an inlay except that it also replaces one or more of the biting tips of the tooth called the cusps.

This thpe of ceramic restoration completely covers the entire tooth.  It is indicated when a major repair or change in the shape or color of a tooth is required and when porcelain laminates will not achieve the desired result.

Procedures can be made to change the gum line.  This is sometimes necessary when the height of the gum is not symmetrical or when it is too low on the teeth, making them appear too short.  There are also techniques to change i “gummy” smiles, ie., when too much gum shows when smiling.
