Meet Dr. Gerald K. Appelle
Dr. Gerald K. Appelle grew up in Mt. Vernon, NY. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College where he completed his pre-med requirements while majoring in Spanish with a minor in art. Dr. Appelle’s lifelong interest in art and his talent as a sculptor, draftsman, and painter, has had a strong bearing on the skills he brings to dentistry. Some of his works can be viewed on this website.
After college he attended Tufts, the most prestigious dental school in the country, earning his DMD degree. This was followed by two years in the U.S. Army as a dentist, with the rank of captain. He was on active duty for one year in California and one year in Vietnam during the war, earning an Army Commendation Medal and Bronze Star in the process. He also put four more years in the reserves, while beginning private practice in New York City.
Professionally, Dr. Appelle has spent countless hours taking continuing education courses, both didactic and hands-on, over the years and has developed a knowledge base and level of expertise that can only come with experience. In 1980 he received an award from his dental society acknowledging his having taken over 100 hours of continuing education courses, more than any other dentist in New York for that year.
Dr. Appelle has treated thousands of patients from all walks of life, from rich and famous celebrities to average everyday working people. He has also served as a consultant to major insurance companies, law firms, and governmental agencies in hundreds of liability cases involving oral and tooth related injuries, appearing as an expert witness in court dozens of times.
He holds U.S. Patent Number 4,618,325 for a dental shade guide device he invented, as well as having received many awards and recognition over his career.
Dr. Appelle is married and has a daughter in college. He spends his weekends May – September at his summer residence in East Hampton.
